On Monday, October 24th, thousands of Torontonians will celebrate Diwali! What is Diwali, you might ask? Also spelled Divali, Diwali is India’s biggest and most important holiday; the name is taken from the Sanskrit term Dipavali, meaning “row of lights”. The main celebration of Diwali takes place on the day of the new Moon, when the sky is at its darkest; as the festival symbolizes the victory of light over darkness (and good over evil), it is traditionally celebrated with candles, clay lamps, and oil lanterns. They also have huge feasts, cultural celebrations and performances, and much more; here are some of our picks for the best places to celebrate this holiday!
