Have you ever wanted to see the Milky Way? There might be too much light pollution in Toronto but there are many spots in the province where you’ll be able to see constellations, galaxies, planets, and maybe even the Northern Lights.
Ontario has three protected areas for stargazing and three Dark-Sky Preserves. Parks Canada defines these as, “protected areas that make a special commitment to protect and preserve the night, reducing or eliminating light pollution in all forms”.

1. Bruce Peninsula National Park
Bruce Peninsula National Park is a Dark-Sky Preserve. This spot is famous for its crystal clear water but the night skies are the main attraction. There are two observing areas: near the facilities by Cyprus Lake and a coastal site called Singing Sands.

2. Fathom Five National Marine Park
Fathom Five National Marine Park is another Dark-Sky Preserve in Ontario. Located a little over four hours from Downtown Toronto, it will definitely be worth the drive.

3. Point Pelee National Park
Known for bird and Monarch butterfly migration, this park is also great for stargazing. Point Pelee was the first national park to be recognized by the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada, receiving its designation in 2006.

4.Bluewater Outdoor Education Centre
Awarded dark sky preserve status in 2012 by the RASC, the Bluewater Astronomical Society promotes astronomy education and stargazing joy. Special public viewing events are held on select dates at the ES Fox Observatory.

5. Torrance Barrens Dark Sky Preserve
This picture perfect destination offers over 4,000 acres of fully preserved conservation reserve. The smooth granite bedrock and open landscapes provide easy gear setup and unobstructed night sky views.

6. Lennox and Addington Dark Sky Viewing Area
This spot is the most southerly point in Ontario that offers a night sky experience very similar to what was available more than 100 years ago. Their viewing area is open from dusk till dawn and admission is free!

7. North Frontenac Astronomy Park
This was Canada’s first municipality to receive the Dark Sky Preserve Designation. This spot has a Fred Lossing Telescope, picnic benches, parking, electrical services, and accessible washrooms.
