February is Black History Month, which means many events and festivities are happening this month in Toronto to honour the legacy of the Black community. Here are a few Black History Month events in the city.

1). KUUMBA presented by TD Bank Group

This event is Toronto’s largest Black Futures Month celebration. In its 28th year, this event helps to support Black artists and culture. The event features music, workshops, dance, and literary events that helps to highlight contemporary artists and thought leaders from the Afro-diaspora here in Canada.

2). Everbloom Micro Music Festival for Black History Month

This 19+ event is jam-packed with music, drag queens, and vendors that feature black-owned businesses. Celebrate the contributions and achievements of Black Canadians and their communities.

3). The Black Diamond Ball 2023
The Black Diamond Ball is a signature event of Black History Month in Toronto. This event helps bring together the Black community and celebrates their accomplishments and achievements. This in-person event will be recorded live for a televised broadcast at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel in Toronto. CityTV will also air The Black Diamond Ball gala across Canada.

4). AGO: Friday Nights: RISE Edutainment

On select Fridays in February, there will be performances by RISE edutainment artists to celebrate “black excellence, joy and the power of art.” RISE is an organization that helps to empower Black youth.

5). Black History Month: Black Grapes

This event at stackt market helps to celebrate black winemakers and their wines. Stop by and get to try wines from all over the world, like Canada, the United States, South Africa and much more. Wine and food samples are covered with the ticket to the event.

6). Black Art: In the Absence of Light
Watch the documentary, Black Art: In the Absence of Light at Hot Docs Ted Rogers Cinema for free. This document highlights the contributions of African American artists in the world of art.

7). Films for Black History Month at TIFF Bell Lightbox
Throughout the month of February, join TIFF in celebrating Black excellence in film. Featured films in the series include:

8). Black History Month Concert Series

9). SHOP_BLK Launch Event

At this event, discover local Black-led and Black-owned brands. There will be live music, food, drinks, and free beauty services from Black creators in Toronto.

10). Free art exhibition at Spadina Museum

Spadina Museum has been transformed into an immersive Dis/Mantle art exhibit that uses “an Afrofuturism narrative inspired by Black abolitionists: Mrs Pipkin, the formerly enslaved freedom seeker who as a laundress in the house,” as the city of Toronto website explains. This exhibit is only on until May 28th.

11). Toronto Black Film Festival
Toronto Black Film Festival is returning on February 15th. This event is Canada’s largest film celebration of Black History Month, which features Letitia Wright, Colin Kaepernick, and much more. The festival will have over 125 films from 20 different countries.

12). StreetARToronto JUST US Exhibit at Worth Gallery

Explore this exhibit at Worth Gallery. Get to see and experience different murals that highlight current and historical social issues within the Black and Indigenous communities. The exhibit showcases artwork that is part of the StreetARToronto ‘Just Us’ Mural Program.
